Highland bats move into new batcave

If Highland bats enjoy their creature comforts then a new heated ‘batcave’ should be home from home for them.

Scottish Hydro Electric (SHE) Transmission environmental teams working on the Beauly Denny Project have created a unique batcave for the endangered Pipistrelle bat species - which includes a heating system.

The specially adapted bat box, located near Beauly, uses natural materials to protect the animals during the construction of the replacement overhead transmission line between Beauly and Denny.

Christopher Meek, Environmental Manager for SHE Transmission projects, explained that it was always a priority to look after local wildlife.

He said: “During the planning of our construction projects we undertake detailed surveys to identify species like the Pipistrelle bat. As construction activity takes place we aim to protect and if possible enhance habitats for protected mammals like bats through careful mitigation and compensation measures.

“We are able to do this using our experience and through working closely with experienced bat workers who hold appropriate licenses granted by Scottish Natural Heritage to undertake this type of work.

“Pipistrelle bats are in serious decline and are a protected species under European and UK law and we are helping to preserve their status by introducing the heated batbox.  Being able to control the temperature in the batbox provides a stable environment that can be adjusted to make it suitable for bats throughout the year.

“We are pleased to confirm the first occupants have taken residence in the batbox which has been aptly named ‘The Batcave’.”

Mike Shepherd, from Scottish Natural Heritage, added: “The heated batbox created by the SHE Transmission team is a great example of how vulnerable animals can be protected from harm during construction projects.

“The design and installation of the batbox had to be undertaken to ensure the long term use of the site by bat species. We are confident the batbox will provide ideal conditions for Pipistrelle bats and will increase their roosting opportunities within the site.”
