SSE in Ireland

At SSE, we’ve been investing in Ireland for over 20 years, and we're ready to invest much more.

We've been developing onshore and offshore wind projects to harness one of Ireland's greatest natural resources to deliver cleaner energy for homes and businesses across the country. And for those days when the wind isn't blowing, we're developing the next generation of flexible power stations and low-carbon solutions to help keep the lights on across the country.

To do this, we're investing over €900m to deliver more homegrown energy. Actions, not ambitions will secure Ireland's energy future.

SSE Renewables

SSE Renewables develops, constructs and operates world class renewable power assets in its core markets of Ireland and the UK, with a growing presence internationally. This includes 700MW of operational onshore wind capacity on the island of Ireland across 31 wholly owned SSE and joint venture wind farm sites.

SSE Renewables has a pipeline of Irish projects in development including the Yellow River Wind Farm in County Offaly. Once fully operational in 2025, it will boast 29-turbines and an installed capacity of more than 100MW. SSE Renewables is also progressing the 800MW Arklow Bank Wind Park 2, an offshore wind farm off the coast of County Wicklow which, if delivered, can make a valuable contribution to Ireland’s 2030 climate targets as well as economic development and jobs in south Wicklow and north Wexford.

In addition to wind projects, SSE Renewables has been granted planning permission to progress development of its first utility-scale solar project in Ireland, the proposed 21MWp Richfield Solar Farm in County Wexford.

SSE Airtricity

SSE Airtricity supplies electricity and gas to 750,000 energy customers across the island of Ireland.

It harnesses the wind from SSE Renewables wind farms to supply greener electricity for homes and businesses in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It also supplies an array of energy related services such as smart electricity plans and home energy upgrades, helping customers to reduce and control energy usage in their homes.

Businesses across the island benefit from SSE Airtricity’s innovative energy solutions including energy audits, solar PV, and corporate power purchase agreements.

SSE Thermal

SSE Thermal is on a mission to deliver the flexible energy needed today while powering the transition to net zero. Today, our 464MW plant at Great Island in Co. Wexford is Ireland’s largest and most efficient gas-fired power station – playing a pivotal role in keeping the lights on across the island.

We’re also stepping up to deliver the next generation of flexible power with two new power stations in development which would run on 100% sustainable biofuels. This includes a 170MW facility at Platin in Co. Meath and a 350MW plant at our historic Tarbert site in Co. Kerry. These would be lower carbon than plants operating on traditional fossil fuels, supporting the transition towards net zero, and would be capable of converting to hydrogen in the future once appropriate policy mechanisms and infrastructure are in place.

EV In Ireland

We work closely with our partners and external supply chain to provide best-in-class EV solutions, so we can deliver EV charging infrastructure in Ireland.

In August 2024, SSE proudly opened its first Irish charging facility at Lough Sheever Corporate Park in Mullingar, Co. Westmeath. The 10-bay facility is part of SSE plans to build 300 ultra-rapid EV charging hubs powered by traceable, renewable energy in the Ireland and the UK in the next five years.

Our current investment allocation

Our €930M five-year Net Zero Acceleration Programme Plus investment plan to 2027 expects to allocate ~40% into renewables, ~10% into Airtricity, and ~50% into other businesses, including gas and low-carbon flexible generation technologies.
