SSE installs one millionth smart meter

Major energy supplier, SSE, confirmed today it has installed its one millionth smart meter, another major milestone on the journey to installing new meters in every customer’s home in the country.

The roll out of smart meters is revolutionising the way customers manage their energy use and engage with their energy supplier. They give customers near real time information about how much they are using and how much they are spending, putting an end to estimated bills and helping customers save money.

The roll out is one of the biggest infrastructure projects the energy sector, and indeed the country, has seen in years. SSE alone is investing more that £1bn to install more than seven million meters across Great Britain. SSE has already created hundreds of jobs to help hit the ambitious targets and continues to ramp up the rate that meters are being installed every day.

The one millionth meter was installed in Oxford at the home of Ajesh Singh. After the installation Mr Singh said:

“I booked the appointment as soon as I moved into my new house. Having a smart meter takes away the hassle of having to read the meter myself and means I can check what I am using on a real time basis. I’m looking forward to having the visibility of how much gas and electric I use and making changes to bring down my bill.”

Chris Adams, SSE’s Director of Metering and Smart Transformation, said:

“Hitting one million installs is no easy feat. Any project of this size is going to be a challenge, but I’m incredibly proud of the excellent work done by the teams here at SSE who are helping customers to benefit from this technology.

“Smart meters represent the next big leap forward for the energy sector, bringing the way customers consume energy into the digital age. We’ve already seen customers using this new technology reduce their bills and take control of their energy usage.”

Energy and Clean Growth Minister Claire Perry said:

“This milestone for SSE contributes to the growing 11 million meters which are already empowering consumers to reap the rewards of a smart meter - with 400,000 more meters benefitting homes and businesses every month from being in charge of their energy use.

“Smart meters are helping families save money on their bills. They are a vital upgrade to our infrastructure as we move to a smarter, cleaner and more flexible energy system of the future.”
