OPPORTUNITIES IN ENGINEERING

We offer a number of different development programmes across our Energy businesses. We’re delighted to share with you a little bit more about each of the programmes currently available. Because we are so large and diverse, we recommend you spend a little time reviewing the below information and looking through the different menus on the left-hand side of your screen where you will find out more about SSE and some of the journeys and experiences our current apprentices have enjoyed.

ENGINEERING CRAFT APPRENTICESHIPS

Our accredited apprenticeship programme is aimed at candidates with GCSE’s (or equivalent) in Maths, English and a Science or Engineering/ Technical subjects. This programme offers you the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications and will set you on the path to a long term rewarding career, where you’ll have the opportunity to really make a difference.

We're one of the most diverse energy companies in the industry, with a range of different businesses serving different purposes. We have opportunities for you to join as an Apprentice in Mechanical or Electrical Contracting, as a Multi Craft Apprentices in our Generation & Renewables business and as a Lines Person, Jointer or Electrical Fitter in our Energy Networks business.

Whichever Apprenticeship you choose, you'll have the opportunity to achieve a Modern Apprenticeship qualification and a City & Guilds Technical Certificate (or SVQ in Scotland) at level 2 or 3 depending on the role. You will learn new skills that will help you build a successful career in the industry and the opportunity to forge a career at SSE beyond your Apprenticeship.

TRAINEE ENGINEERS

Our Trainee Engineer Programme is aimed at candidates with A levels (or equivalent) in Maths and Science. This programme is about more than transforming your own future. It’s your chance to become an engineer who’ll help shape the future of energy.

In years one and two, your time will be split between placements and university. In year three, you’ll be given management responsibility. You’ll work with experienced professionals in depots, power stations and control rooms and gain a qualification in Electrical Power Engineering.

At the end of your training , you will qualified to work as an Electrical Network Engineer in our Energy Networks business or a Maintenance Engineer in our Generation & Renewables business.

Cyber & Networks engineering apprenticeships

This is an exciting 2-year development programme where at the end you’ll attain an industry-recognised Level 4 apprenticeship.  We offer a mixture of on-the-job training where you’ll rotate around various parts of our business to obtain a rounded, in-depth understanding of fundamental principles, techniques, technologies and workplace behaviours.  It's not just a technical scheme; more about learning how we use technology to support the business and our customers.

Upon successful completion of the programme, we intend to offer you a permanent role within our business where you’ll contribute to the changing face of technology within our industry

Ideally, you will have achieved two A-Levels (or equivalent) at grade C or above, or an IT-related vocational qualification.  You’ll also need to have GCSE grade C in both Maths and English.  While we don't expect you to know everything about the industry, we do expect you to be a quick and keen learner and someone that is ready to make the most of the opportunities that the apprenticeship provides.  Throughout you’ll be expected to demonstrate your desire and passion for technology.

Recruitment Process

Our aim is to have the right people in the right place at the right time, so our recruitment process is designed to select the best people for our roles, and to identify those who are most likely to complete the programme successfully.

Our selection process involves a short online application form, online assessments relevant to the programme and a final face-to-face assessment.  The assessment will involve a mixture of exercises designed to assess your skills and abilities related to the programme you have applied for.  Due to the large number of candidates under consideration, we may hold assessments regionally therefore you may be required to travel to participate.

The assessments are also a great opportunity for you to meet us, some of our current apprentices and trainees and ask us questions about the programmes.

Our Programmes

Engineering Craft Apprenticeships

This programme offers you the opportunity to gain new skills and qualifications and will set you on the path to a long term rewarding career, where you’ll have the opportunity to really make a difference.

Our accredited apprenticeship programme is aimed at candidates with GCSE’s (or equivalent) in Maths, English and a Science or Engineering/ Technical subjects.   Your personal attributes are just as important as your academic achievements. We are looking for enthusiastic, driven candidates who have a strong interest in engineering and a fascination with how things work. You should enjoy working with your hands and must be comfortable working at heights and within confined spaces. You’ll be a self-starter with good team work and problem-solving skills and the ability to follow instructions.

We’ll need you to be resilient, flexible and prepared to travel as there is the likelihood you’ll be required to work out of hours and some later nights.  You will also be required to stay away from home on block release with your studies at our college provider.

Trainee Engineers

The Trainee Engineer programme provides an opportunity for you to earn a salary at the same time as learning. Over three years your course based learning will include risk assessment and management, workplace projects to develop academic learning, high level technical competence and project management. You will also undertake various work placements to put your newly-learned knowledge into practice and gain practical, hands-on experience.

You will undertake the study element of the programme in 2-3 week blocks at the selected academic provider whilst at your designated SSE site you will complete practical courses in jointing, metering and overhead lines in addition to work based learning.

Cyber & Networks Engineering Apprenticeships

This apprenticeship would suit candidates with a true passion for IT, and a keen interest in understanding why technology is so crucial to the future success of our sector.   This is an exciting 2-year development programme where at the end you’ll attain an industry-recognised Level 4 apprenticeship.  You’ll need to have two A-levels (or equivalent) or an IT-related vocational qualification to apply.
