Clyde Extension completed and operational

The Clyde Extension windfarm (172.8MW) has reached its Commercial Operation Date meaning it has been handed over following its successful construction. The Clyde windfarm and its extension are located in South Lanarkshire with a new total capacity of 522.4MW and SSE believes it is one of the most efficient large wind farms in Great Britain.

Both the original Clyde wind farm and the extension were complex projects, requiring major investment and a great deal of effort to deliver such efficient assets that make a huge contribution to supplying electricity and reducing carbon emissions across the GB market.

As previously stated, SSE has recently sold a further 5% stake in the Clyde development to Greencoat UK Wind plc (UKW) and GLIL Infrastructure LLP (GLIL), which means that now this transaction is completed, SSE’s shareholding in the windfarm is 65% with UKW and GLIL jointly owning 35%. Between them UKW and GLIL also have the option to buy a further 14.9% of Clyde in 2018.

In line with SSE policy and Scottish Government best practice, Clyde windfarm and the extension will deliver community benefit on an annual basis. SSE has engaged with the relevant community councils in each of the benefit areas and the package of funds has been agreed with community. All funds will be open to charities, not-for-profit organisations and constituted community groups only and will follow SSE’s stated fund eligibility criteria.
